Statue of Grace Sherwood

As we get closer to our next FREE Conversation with a Curator  event, let's highlight a prominent tribute to the subject at hand, Grace Sherwood, the "Witch of Pungo." The bronze statue, which sits near Sentara Independence Hospital,  and was created by Robert G. Cunningham, depicts Sherwood carrying a bundle of garlic and rosemary next to a raccoon, representing her love for animals, along with her knowledge of herbal medicines for healing.

Learn more about Sherwood's history at the Lynnhaven Colonial Education Center on Thursday, Aug. 3, from 5-7 p.m. We will be joined by Scott Moore, a Virginia Beach native and associate professor of history at Eastern Connecticut State University, who is currently writing a book about her history and legend. The book, titled The Witch of Pungo: Grace Sherwood in Virginia History, Legend, and Culture, will be published by the University of Virginia Press in 2024.Event is FREE and open to the public. No advanced RSVP required. Seating is limited, and will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
